Finally, how do we make three tricks from this holding? Dummy
Ì A Q 7 4
We lead small towards the Jack. If East plays the King
we have 3 tricks. However if East holds the King and does
not play it, the Jack wins. We now play to the Ace and lead
the 7. So we make three tricks when East holds the King You (declarer)
with K x, K x x, or a mistake is made with K x x x (x). Ì J 3

COUNT YOUR TRICKS
Review
When we see the dummy we first say “Thank you partner” and then,
before we touch a card, we remember P. L. P.
1. Look at each suit in turn and count our Quick Tricks by
Power. These are tricks that we can win now without losing
the lead.
2. Remember the total and, again looking at each suit in turn, add
our Slow tricks by Power. These are tricks that we can win in a
minute but will have to lose the lead and then win it back.
3. Now look for tricks by Length. These are low cards that will
win tricks because we have run the opponents out of the suit.
(You have to be able to count to 13 to do this).
4. Finally look for possible tricks by Position. Notice that we do
this last because they are only possible tricks.
5. We work on the tricks that we need to establish first, that is,
slow tricks by Power, tricks by Position and tricks by Length.
6. Only when we have made this initial plan do we declare our
contract, that is, game or part score.
7. When we are playing a single suit there are two things to
remember
a. Suppose dummy has 5 cards in a suit and you (declarer)
has 4. Dummy is ‘the long hand’ and you are ‘the short
