Okay, we now come on to slow tricks by power. These are tricks
that we have not got yet but we will have in a minute. Look
at the next example - Ì K Q J 10
Here we MUST make 3 tricks “in a minute”. We
play the suit and at some point an opponent will Ì 6 5 2
take the Ace and then, when you regain the lead,
you win 3 slow tricks.
T Tricks by Length. These are lower cards that will win because the
opponents have run out. For instance, you hold -
Ë A K 7 4 2
After you win the Queen, then the Jack, (honours
from the short hand first) the Ace and the King the Ë Q J 8 3
opponents will have run out and the Ë7 will win.
Sometimes these are only possible tricks. Look at this -
Ë A K Q J 9
After you have play the top four cards (quick tricks
Ë 5 2
by power) it is almost certain that the 9 will be a
trick. However, you must watch carefully on the second round
to make sure that both opponents follow.
T Tricks by Position. These are possible tricks. Tricks that occur if
the right opponent holds a particular card. For example, this might
happen -
You have 1 slow trick by power guaranteed but if Í K Q 4
West holds the Ace and you lead up to the dummy
twice you will have two tricks. That is, we first lead Í 5 3
the 3 and if West plays low we play the Queen. If
the Queen wins we cross back to hand in a side suit and lead the 5.
Again we must remember -
