Word Bridge Meaning
Dummy 1. In Minibridge the player from the declaring side with the
least points.
2. The hand held by the player opposite the declarer
Game To contract for enough scoring tricks to get to 100 points.
Hand The set of 13 cards belonging to a player at the start of a game.
Hearts One of the four suits using the symbol Ì
High Card Often shortened to "points" or even HCP. A simple method but
Points remarkably accurate used to evaluate the strength of a hand. Ace =
4, King = 3, Queen = 2 and a Jack = 1
Knave Another word for the Jack.
Minibridge A cut down version of Bridge that is used as a teaching aid, but a
valuable game in its own right needing a slightly different mind-set
to Bridge.
Pack The complete set of 52 cards, split into four suits of 13 cards each.
Part score To contract for 7 tricks at least
Partners Bridge and Minibridge are games for four players. The players
sitting opposite each other at the table play together and are
therefore partners. Partners aim to co-operate to get the best result
for their side on each hand.
Scoring tricks In bridge the first 6 tricks do not score. The seventh trick is the first
scoring trick.
Shuffle To mix the pack. The best method to do this is the "riffle shuffle".
