While editing Saltwater Fly Fishing magazine, I got to know Capt. Tom
Rowland, and he later helped develop this knot; he’s also a creative fly
tier. Rowland guided in the Rocky Mountains and later in Key West,
Florida, and was known as a hard-working, no-nonsense angler. He now
produces television shows, and you can find out more about this knot

how this knot was named—not for the profile of the knot, but in a

humorous reference to the nickname a waitress gave him one night at a
Cuban restaurant, Slim Beauty.
