5.2.2 Fracture-Related Terms



                   Closed Fracture
                   A fracture where the bone does not bre ak through the skin.


                   Open Fracture
                   A fracture where the bone bre aks through the skin, incre asing infection r isk.


                   Greenstick Fracture
                   An incomplete fracture common in children, where one side of the bone bends while the other bre aks.


                   Comminuted Fracture
                   A fracture where the bone is shattered into mul tiple fragments.


                   Reduction
                   The process of re aligning a fractured or disloc ated bone to its nor mal anatomic al position.

                   Nonunions
                   Failure of a fractured bone to he al proper l y.


                   Malunion
                   He aling of a fractured bone in an incor rect anatomic al position.


                   Stress Fracture
                   A small crack in the bone c aused by repetitive stress or overuse.

                   Pathologic Fracture
                   A fracture occur r ing in a bone we akened by dise ase.


                   Callus
                   New bone tissue that for ms around a fracture dur ing he aling.
