5.2.3 Casting & Splinting Terms
Cast
A r igid, ex ter nal immobilization device used to st abilize fractures or injur ies.
Splint
A flexible or r igid device used to suppor t or immobilize a bod y p ar t temporar il y.
Plaster of Paris
A quick-setting mater ial made from c alcium sulfate, used histor ic all y for or thopedic c asting.
Fiberglass
A light weight, durable mater ial commonl y used for moder n c asts.
Bivalve Cast
A c ast that is split into t wo hal ves to allow removal and adjustment.
Stockinette
A tubular layer applied to the skin bene ath the c ast for protection and comfor t.
Padding
Mater ial used bet ween the skin and c asting mater ial to prevent pressure sores and enhance comfor t.
Windowing
The cre ation of an opening in a c ast to access under l ying tissues for inspection or tre atment.
Casting Saw
A specialized oscillating tool used to safel y remove c asts.
