Seogyo-dong Church began as Missionary Underwood built a villa
with a scenic view along the Han River near Seosegyo Bridge (Zandari) in
1894. While he was staying in summer time, he built Zandari church,
evangelized, and worshiped at the villa. Choi Bong-in and his wife
Elder Choi Bong-in came to Seoul from Gangneung at the age of
16 and settled in Yanghwajin, was baptized by Pastor Underwood at

On July 4th, 1948, Joo Jae-myeong, the first delegated pastor of the
Seogyo-dong Church, was appointed. When Korean War broke out
in 1950, Pastor Joo Jae-myeong refused to evacuate and guarded
the church. He was held at a security office in August of the same
year while holding a worship service every week, and was seized and
martyred in Ganggye Prison. He was 31 years old at that time. The
