Alexander Albert Pieters (Korean name Pideuk, 1871-1958) was a missionary who translated the
book of Psalms, one of the Old Testaments, into Korean and delivered it to Korea, and is
the lyricist of hymn 383 and 75. He was born as a Russian Jew and went to Japan to escape
persecution, and renamed himself after the name of Rev. Pieters who baptized him.
He arrived in Korea as a Bible salesman after being sent by American Bible Society. He
pioneered about 10 churches, including Segok and Naegok Church, on the outskirts of
Seoul (now Gangnam-gu) . His life has not been well known because his wife died early from
illness, and he retired in 1941 and finished the rest of his life in 1958 at a retirement pastor's
facility near Los Angeles. Joon-seo Park, an honorary professor at Yonsei University, went
to the U.S. and found the Pieters’ cemetery after asking all around and established the
Missionary Pieters Memorial Association to inform Pieters’ works. Martyrdom memorial stone
