Alexander Albert Pieters (Korean name Pideuk, 1871-1958) was a missionary who translated the
book of Psalms, one of the Old Testaments, into Korean and delivered it to Korea, and is
the lyricist of hymn 383 and 75. He was born as a Russian Jew and went to Japan to escape
persecution, and renamed himself after the name of Rev. Pieters who baptized him.
He arrived in Korea as a Bible salesman after being sent by American Bible Society. He
pioneered about 10 churches, including Segok and Naegok Church, on the outskirts of
Seoul (now Gangnam-gu) . His life has not been well known because his wife died early from
illness, and he retired in 1941 and finished the rest of his life in 1958 at a retirement pastor's
facility near Los Angeles. Joon-seo Park, an honorary professor at Yonsei University, went
to the U.S. and found the Pieters’ cemetery after asking all around and established the
Missionary Pieters Memorial Association to inform Pieters’ works. Martyrdom memorial stone

Seoul Anglican Cathedral is so beautiful that it is designated as Seoul Tangible Cultural
Property No. 35. Construction began in 1922 and was completed on May 2, 1926, and
was expanded in 1996. Construction of the cathedral began as designed by British Arthur
Dixon, but it was difficult to proceed properly under Japanese rule.

The cathedral was finally completed as originally designed in 1996. The cathedral is a
beautiful building that combines Romanesque style with Korean traditional architectural
techniques. Anglican Church began missionary work in Korea in 1885. Missionary J. R.
Wolf, who was a Chinese missionary, visited Korea and preached.
Seoul Anglican Cathedral purchased a hanok (a traditional Korean style building) on the site of
the present-day Seoul Anglican Cathedral on December 21, 1890 and named it “Jangrim
Seong-dang” and the first service of Holy Communion was held by Bishop Yo-han Ko.
If you visit Seoul Anglican Cathedral, I would like to recommend that you pay attention
to the cathedral building above all else. Inside the cathedral, there are stone pillars
symbolizing the 12 apostles of the Lord on the left and right, and a mosaic image of Jesus
Christ is engraved on the front semicircular wall. The remains of Bishop Trollope lie in the
Missionary Pieters Eva Field Missionary Pieters underground cathedral.
