From the end of 1900, Pastor Min Roa of North Presbyterian Church in the U.S. conducted
missionary work in Chungcheong Province, which has not yet been touched by
Presbyterianism, and he conducted missionary work around Cheongju with Kim Heung-
kyung. Promising young people such as Kim Won-bae, Bang Heung-geun, Lee Young-
kyun, Kim Jae-ho, and Lee Beom-jun came to believe in Jesus for the first time.
In 1904, he established a large thatched house with six rooms outside the South Gate.
This is the beginning of Cheongju Jeil Church. When the church grew a year after the
establishment of the church, it moved to its current location and started a new church.
This is a historic place was originally Cheongju official residence and a prison where
many church members were tortured and finally shed tears of martyrdom during the Great
Catholic Persecution in the late Joseon Dynasty. Many patriotic youths with the passion
flocked to Cheongju-eup Church, and those from this church took the lead in the national
movement during the Japanese colonial era. They also contributed a lot to democratization
in 1970s. If you go to Cheongju Jeil Church, you can feel
the scent of history, including Mangseonru Pavilion.
