If you follow the causeway along the River Miho in Cheongju, you will find a neatly
arranged chapel building on the right and a large black stone monument is erected at the
corner of the yard. It is the “Monument of Christian Introduction”, which was established
in 1985 by the Chungcheong-do Association of the foundation for the 100th Anniversary
of Korean Church. Missionaries who came to Joseon after 1884, Allen, Underwood, and
Appenzeller, Oh Cheonbo who established the Shindae Church, Tavern Church where
people had worship services hanging a cross and Korean flag painted on cotton cloth,

Missionary F.S. Miller who have laid the foundation for an evangelical church centered
on the Shindae Church, and the Churches in Chungcheong-do were written on the
monument. The chapel of 116th anniversary of the foundation was completed in 2016,
but the old chapel was left untouched and its gates were rusty and chained. The fact made
me displeased. Next to the broken wall, you can see the memorial monument of the first
elder Oh Eul-seok and the monument of the evangelist Lee Chun-sung, wife of the church
founder, Oh Chueon-bo. The history of the church was lost during Korean war and there
was no remaining. I hope the Korean Christian Church will work more on preserving

history and managing historical sites. First Arrival in Korea

Cornerstone One of the reasons for the rapid growth of the Korean church is that it was built on the
Bible. In 1882, the Korean Bible was published by missionary Ross and Koreans such as Lee

introduced to Korea is Maryangjin. In 1816, the British government instructed the Murry
Maxwell, the Captain of ship Alcest and ship Lyra, and Captain Basil Hall to explore Korea's
west coast.
While inspecting the west coast and drawing up a map, they stopped by Gagalgot in front of
Maryangjin on Sept. 5 and presented a Bible to Cho Dae-bok for the first time. The record
was written in “the 19th volume of the Annals of Sunjo (Vol. 48 of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, a
member of the Korean History Compilation) ” and in “A Voyage to the West Coast of Corea” which was
published in 1818. Seocheon-gun is also pushing for a project to build a memorial hall for
