                                                                                                                 Daejeon Theological University began in 1954 as
                                               Korean Baptist Theological University
                                                                                                                 ‘Daejeon Night Seminary’. At that time, church
                                               Seminary is an evangelical theological
                                                                                                                 leaders were insufficient, so the night seminary
                                               university of the Korea Baptist
                                                                                                                 was established. Pastor Lee Ja-ik was inaugurated
                                               Convention with a 70-year history
                                                                                                                 as the first principal, and he served as a general
                                               and tradition.

                                                                                                          the history of Korean Presbyterianism. Pastor Lee Ja-ik was born in

                                                                                                          Even though He was Jo Deok-sam's coachman, he became the
                                                                                                          church elder before his master. Even after becoming the second elder
                                                                                                          of Geumsan Church, Jo Deok-sam treated Lee Ja-ik very kindly and
                                                                                                                 supported him to study theology. When Lee Ja-
                                                                                                                 ik became a pastor, Jo Deok-sam asked him to
                                                                                                                 be a senior pastor of Geumsan Church, so they
                                                                                                                 showed a beautiful relationship between a pastor
                                                                                                                 and an elder. Daejeon Theological University is a
                                                                                                                 school where this kind of spirit flows.

            Baptist Theological University Seminary opened in February 1953 as the Baptist Bible
            Institute, and missionary John A. Abernathy (Korean name: Na Yo-han)  was appointed as the
            director, and Rev. Han Gi-chun and Choi Hyeong-geun were appointed as teachers. On
            April 8, 1954, the status of the bible institute was elevated to Baptist Seminary, and started
            having the appearance of a seminary by obtaining the authorization to open “preparatory
            courses” and “special courses” from the Ministry of Education.
            18 special department students graduated from the seminary in the first graduation
            ceremony on March 8, 1956 and the main building which commenced construction on
            the Mok-dong campus site on October 1956 was completed in November 1957. The main
            building was named after Dr. John Abernathy as “Abernathy Hall” for his dedicated service
