THE BRACHA OF SITTING IN THE SUKKAH

The Ashkenazic custom is to recite the beracha of leisheiv basukkah following the reciting of the beracha of mezonot if one
eats a quantity equivalent to a k’beitza of mezonot food.

        Mishna Berura, 639:16
And one needs a sukkah – meaning according to the basic halacha [not just a stringent standard], and therefore
one needs to recite the beracha of leisheiv basukkah. The Maamar Mordechai writes that one who ate pat haba
b’kisnin [e.g., cake] in the morning with his coffee and the like, as we have the custom of doing throughout the
year, although one doesn’t say hamotzi, as he has not eaten a measurement with which people usually designate
a meal, nevertheless [in this case] it needs to be eaten in a sukkah, for he does designate it as a meal. And this is
our custom to say a leisheiv basukkah over this.” Now he wrote the case that was common, but the same applies
even without coffee, since he designates the pat haba bekisnin as a meal. If he didn’t designate it as a meal, but ate
more than a k’beitza, there are varying opinions among the Acharonim whether he must say leisheiv basukkah.
See the Shaarei Teshuva who writes that regarding Shabbat and Yom Tov morning, where one says Kiddush over
the pat haba b’kisnin as his “meal,” [as Shabbat morning Kiddush must be eaten with a “meal,” even of mezonot
food], even if afterwards he leaves and goes outside to greet his rabbi and the like, and there is a break of a few
hours until his main meal, according to everyone he may say leisheiv basukkah, for since he eats it as a meal which
is needed for the Kiddush [to be valid], it is appropriate to say the beracha leisheiv basukkah for his intention
defines it as a fixed meal. But during the week one should not make a beracha [in this case], for safeik berachot
lehakel (we are lenient concerning uncertainties about berachot). Nevertheless, the custom is to recite a beracha
even during the week. So in order to absolve oneself of the concern of a beracha in vain one should take care not
to leave immediately after eating; rather one should sit for a while and should have intention when saying the
beracha for the eating as well as the sitting that follows.
