Guide Students with Handbook Activities
Stairway to Friendship
Reaching out into the world to engage others and hear their stories helps students understand and
appreciate different perspectives. Most of all, it teaches empathy. Once they start this practice of
building connections, they may continue it with other people they meet.
Sharing Your Story
In completing this activity, students have a chance to express their authentic selves, actively
recognizing and acknowledging that their story matters. Encourage students to apply their creative
talents in telling their “real” story.
Help Them Dig Deeper – Research Project
Students may explore the concept of family trees and then apply it in creating their own "Family
Story Tree". For each family member, they can highlight an attribute that best expresses the
essence of that person, shared through story. They may choose to document some of their favorite
stories for personal remembrances.
