The Read House and Gardens

Owner/User: Delaware Historical Society

Location: New Castle, Delaware
Design Statement: The Read House exterior restoration
involved all aspects of the exterior envelope consisting of
masonry, stonework, ironwork, windows, doors, shutters
cornice, roofing and flashings. Additionally, the brick
sidewalks at the street and gardens were repaired.

Bernardon provided project management services and
Frens and Frens Restoration Architects provided restoration
consulting services. Bernardon also assisted the Delaware The New Castle Historical Society honored the DHS with
Historical Society (DHS) in selecting contractors for the the 2010 Bamberger Preservation Award and the American
work, bidding and construction administration as well as Association for State and Local History (AASLH) honored
obtaining the New Castle Historic Area Commission, State the DHS in 2011 with an Award of Merit for Leadership
Historic Preservation Office and National Park Services in History for the DHS’s commitment and successful
approvals. completion of protecting the Read House’s hallmark
exterior architectural features as well as interior structure
and museum collections.
