movements
were able to
be activated in
order to
provide the
required air
support for
the friendly
forces on the
ground.
While performing active duty, all active soldiers
were expected to assist with “Cassi Vac’s” – Casualty Evacuation, being flown
in from various fighting areas.
The first helicopter “Cassi Vac” arrived and to the surprise of Sgt Rick
Greyvenstein, the patient was a non-friendly force member. When questioned
why we are assisting the enemy, Sgt Rick Greyvenstein was reminded of the
Geneva Convention Rules: “Soldier injured in the line of fire may not be left
behind”. This was an astonishing realisation reminding everybody that
regardless of what side you may be fighting on, everyone has an accountability
to assist with rescuing friend and foe alike.
In was a quiet afternoon when the air sirens rang out loud, Sgt Rick
Greyvenstein experienced a loss of a couple of heart beats. All soldiers were
drilled to report to the designated assembly points and waited for instruction
