DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHT
LIGHT RAIL GRINDER (LRG-33) IN BANGLADESH FOR DHAKA METRO
INTRODUCTION
Bangladesh Industrial Development Authority (BIDA) was established in 2016 with a vision to become a world-
class investment promotion agency to achieve economic progress and a mission to attract domestic and foreign
investment in the private sector, improve services, coordinate effectively, and create an investment-friendly envi-
ronment.
With this vision and mission, BIDA began to revolutionize the urban transportation system by building an ap-
proved mass transit system called Dhaka Metro Transit Corporation Limited (DMTCL) in Dhaka (see Fig. 1), the
capital and busiest city of Bangladesh
The Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Authority of the Ministry of Communications is leading the project, and the
Nippon Koei Dhaka Metro (NKDM) Association, a consortium of foreign and Bangladeshi companies, is acting as
general consultant (GC). Nippon Koei Japan and Development Design Consultants are members of the NKDM
Association.
Figure 1: Dhaka Proposed Metro Routes
The network includes six lines (including MRT Line 1) with a total length of 128.741 kilometres (79.996 miles). The
Dhaka Metro is expected to carry more than 60,000 passengers per hour with an average wait time of 4 minutes.
The entire route will be covered in less than 40 minutes at a speed of 100 km/h (62 mph), and is expected to signifi-
cantly reduce the number of private cars on Dhaka's streets and the associated seven-hour downtime.
