DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHT
The project began with MRT Line 6 (see Fig. 2), which consists of 16 elevated stations, each 180 metres long, and
20.1 kilometres of electrified light rail tracks. With the exception of the depot and some associated light rail tracks,
the entire Line 6 will be elevated above existing roads, primarily over the median strip of the roads to allow traffic
to flow underneath.

SCOPE OF PROJECT
Because the city is congested, the design of the existing and other proposed lines will include many sharp curves to
connect the major nodes of the city. Given the many sharp curves, the client and consultant have reviewed the
need for a modern track maintenance system to improve ride quality and commuter safety during operating hours.
Rail grinders are one of the most successful innovations to meet the needs of the above agenda to ensure track
safety and improve reliability. DMTCL procured an 8-stone Light Rail Grinder (LRG33) series (see Fig. 3) capable of
grinding open sections and switches and equipped with world-class quality control systems. The LOA was awarded
to Loram USA with a subcontract to Vandhana International Pvt. Ltd. (VIPL), a long-time technical and strategic
partner of Loram in the subcontinent for more than 30 years.
The first phase of the contract includes a two-year defect notification period (DNP) and a three-year comprehen-
sive annual operation and maintenance contract (COMC), both to be performed by VIPL, India with technical sup-
port and guidance from Loram USA.
