Candidates from 60 centres registered for 27,373 CSEC subject entries in May-June 2017 which is
equivalent to 4.3% decrease or 1,235 subject entries less than the 2016 sitting. Of the 27,373 subject
entries, 86.8% (23,768) received a grade compared to 85.6% (24,494) last year. Sixty-nine point nine
percent (69.9%) of the 23,768 graded entries received Grades I-III which is a satisfactory level of
performance at the CSEC level. This figure represents a 1.6% increase of Grades I-III compared to the
May-June 2016 sitting of 68.3%.
Seven subjects maintained an average of 80% and above of its entries receiving Grades I-III for the
past three years. Agricultural Science Single Award with 99.5% (362) in 2017, 99.4% (345) in 2016
and 98.9% (277) in 2015; Electronic Document Preparation and Management with 99.2% (760) in
2017, 97.9% (688) in 2016 and 97.5% (505) in 2015; Family and Resource Management with 86.7%
(26) in 2017, 85.2% (23) in 2016 and 88% (22) in 2015; Food, Nutrition and Health with 96.3% (79)
in 2017, 86.8% (105) in 2016 and 87.5% (56) in 2015; Physical Education and Sport with 99.7%
(1,159) in 2014, 99.3% (1,062) in 2016 and 99.9% (859) in 2015; Principles of Business with 89.9%
(1,049) in 2017, 91.3% (1,043) in 2016 and 94.8% (954) in 2015; Spanish received 85.1% (1,818) in
2017, 83.2% (1,906) in 2016 and 83.9% (1,581) in 2015.
Eight subjects sat in May-June 2017 demonstrated notable improvement in the attainment of Grades I-
III compared to nine in the 2016 sitting. These subjects are: Additional Math receiving 42.9% (12) in
2017, compared to 33.3% (13) in 2016; Economics receiving 78.1% (96) in 2017, compared to 51.4%
(57) in 2016; Industrial Technology (Electrical) receiving 82.9% (34) in 2017 compared to 73.1% (57)
in 2016; Information Technology receiving 87.7% (1,149) in 2017 compared to 70% (928) in 2016;
Office Administration receiving 88.4% (504) in 2017 compared to 70.7% (490) in 2016; Principles of
Accounts receiving 76.8% (583) in 2017 compared to 66.5% (515) in 2016; Religious Education
receiving 72.3% (417) in 2017 compared to 46.3% (302) in 2016; Technical Drawing receiving 91.3%
(146) in 2017 compared to 69.2% (171) in 2016.
Six subjects exhibited a slight increase in the percentage of subject entries attaining Grades I-III in
2017 when compared to three subjects in the 2016 sitting. Industrial Technology (Building) displayed
a 3.5% increase in 2017 that is 87.8% (65) in 2017 compared to the averaged percentage grade of
84.3% (69) in 2016 for Building Technology Construction and Woods; Industrial Technology
(Mechanical) displayed a 4.0% increase in 2017 that is 100% (25) in 2017 compared to 96.0% (24) in
2016; Integrated Science displayed a 0.5% increase that is 75.7% (535) in 2017 compared to 75.2%
(611) in 2016; Mathematics displayed a 0.2% increase that is 50.8% (1,743) in 2017 compared to
50.6% (1,747) in 2016; Social Studies displayed a 3.7% increase that is 61.9% (959) in 2017 compared
to 58.3% (872) in 2016; Visual Arts displayed a 4.7% increase that is 76.7% (33) in 2017 compared to
72.1% (62) in 2016.
Ten subjects exhibited a decrease in the percentage of satisfactory Grades I-III when comparing the
May-June 2017 and 2016 sitting with twelve subjects. These are: Biology receiving 55.9% (513) in
2017 compared to 72.2% (663) in 2016; Caribbean History receiving 64.5% (223) in 2017 compared
to 64.7% (202) in 2016; Chemistry receiving 44.3% (270) in 2017 compared to 44.9% (266) in 2016;
English A receiving 70.4% (2,499) in 2017 compared to 70.9% (2,530) in 2016; English B receiving
35.3% (453) in 2017 compared to 43.0% (592) in 2016; Geography receiving 60.7% (102) in 2017
compared to 68.5% (152) in 2016; Human and Social Biology receiving 53.1% (702) compared to
62.6% (849) in 2016, Music 52.2% (12) in 2017 compared to 71.4% (5) in 2016; Physics receiving
62.1% (262) in 2017 compared to 62.3% (273) in 2016; Textiles, Clothing and Fashion receiving
60.0% (12) in 2017 compared to 64.6% (31) in 2016.
