For MEETINGS HELD 2017
This report covers the meetings and activities of the CXC National Committee. The committee
comprises seventeen (17) members. (Please see attached listing). Meetings were held three (3) times
for the year as indicated:
Meetings held for 2017
July 26, 2017
August 23, 2017
September 20, 2017
Robust discussions were held in the meetings on the impact of the policies and operational
procedures of CXC on our education system.
MAIN ISSUES ADDRESSED
1. Jamaica’s performance in the CSEC Examinations – strong to marginal improvements in
some subjects and a marginal decline to steady performance in others. New subjects were
offered with creditable results in the CAPE Exams which recorded an overall 2.4 per cent
improvement for Unit 1 this year over 2016 and a 5.7 per cent increase in Unit 2 over last year.
The Ministry continues to redouble its efforts to provide greater support for teachers and
participate in examination preparation sessions for students. The Ministry is targeting 100 of its
high schools for intervention.
2. CCSLC Examination – CCSLC remains an issue for Jamaica as our students and teachers have
the perception that the examination in an inferior product.
3. In order for the examination to be accepted, the Ministry continues to implement new marketing
strategies for buy-in to take place. It is also expected however that the new proposal that has
been prepared; following submission and approval for implementation will allow for Jamaica to
offer this examination once more to its out of school population.
