                                                       Wind energy

                                                    General Overview

Wind energy referred to as wind-power is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy

technologies. It is also one of the most economically viable technology. Wind turbines use the

natural power of the wind to generate electricity. The wind blows the 'blades' of the turbine that
are attached to a rotor which then spins a generator to create electricity. The rotor then spins a

generator to create electricity. A collection of wind turbines in one location is called a wind farm.

In rural and isolated villages, wind energy can be used to power community centres, schools and
health huts, and homes. Caribbean countries with wind farms are:

                                 Country Size Location

Dominican Republic (Matafongo) 34 MW Sabana Buey, Peravia Province

Jamaica (Wigton Wind Farm) 62.7 MW Rose Hill, Manchester

St. Kitts and Nevis 2.2 MW Nevis
