Components of a stand-alone solar system

Solar home systems are stand-alone solar PV systems which comprise of one or more solar
panels, a charge controller, an inverter, and batteries for storage. These systems are also referred

               as off-grid systems.

               The components are:

❖ The PV panel which is a semiconductor that converts sunlight directly into electricity.

❖ The charge controller manages the power going into the battery from the solar panels

and protects the battery from overcharging or over discharging.
❖ The inverter converts the direct current (DC) power that the solar panel generate into

alternating current (AC) power that is used in homes and businesses.

❖ The battery stores excess power for later use and during the night and on cloudy days.
