1 understand that varioue people interested in education in Bahrain
are asking for the provision by the Government of School Motor Coaches
lobe mod for the purpose of carrying the children between their homes
and the schools.
I consider that tho provision of school motor coaches would be a sheer
luxury, and therefore a wasto of money. Such a step would also "o
far towards further lowering thoalroady low standard of health among the
people of Bahrain. In England many thousands of young villago
ill on walk several miles to school, and back ugain, ovory day, and this
practico has always been regarded, by paronts, schoolraastora, and docto ra
alike, ns being of tho utmost benefit to tho health of the children, who in this
way obtain plenty of outdoor exercise, without which tho instruction givon
in tbo classroom could nob bo properly assimilated. In the60 days, thcro
is too much riding about in motor-cars by young pooplo, who would
derive far greater benefit from their journeys if they made them on foot.
For these reasons, I strongly advise your Highness nob to consent to
the expenditure of any publio money on tho provision of school motor
coaches.
