                           P. S.—Tbo mnres plundered and sold by ibis Chief wore sent on board to tbo Resident,
and the Chief's guns woro publicly suncudcrud and rclurucd (o him on dopusit, pending good
                        conduct.
                                                                   (Sd.) L. Pklly.
                            20. Tlio Chief furllier sent on board to mo tbo two Arnb mares which
lie had reccivcd.from the Bahrein Shaikh as portion of the Guitar plunder.
Theso marcs are now at Bussadorc iu charge of the l?irst Assistant Kesident.
Their owner, tho Shaikh of Wukra, has beeu invited to send a duly authorized
Agout to rccoivo charge of them. I warned tho owner, however, that if for
tho future ho or any other Chief should take the luw into his own bauds
instead of referring lo tho Xlesident, aud should thus lose his marcs, I
would, indeed, compel tho plunderer to give them up, but that, iustcad of re
storing them, I would cuuso them to bo publicly shot.
                            27. As regards the guns (threo in number) of tbo Aboothabcc Shaikh, it
6ccmcd proper that he should surrender them, but at tho samo time thcro was
risk if he wero depriyod of them, that his fort- might be insulted by tho
Bedouins, and that injury would result to tho trade of tho port. I arranged,
thcroforc, in concert with Captain Brown, that tho guns should bo surrendered
und then returned to tho Chief on deposit pouding good conduct, thus taking
                        a guaraulce for tho future.
                            28. Accordingly, tho Socond Assistant llesidcnt and tho Gunner of
Viyilont proceeded on shoro with tho Chief, and tho guus wero publicly
surrendered and returned. Appended is a copy of.Captaiu Smith's Iteport aud
a Tabular Statement showing thu description and number of the pieces.
                            20. I could perccivo at tbo conclusion of our proceedings that tho
Aboothabcc Chief was humblod, aud I hope and thiuk ho will pauso before ho
                        again disturbs tho peace.
                            30. Tho Chief complained, however, that it was a practico among the
pearl divers to roccivc ua advauoc from the Chiefs or merchants of ouo port#
and then at the conclusion pf tho season to lovant with their gains to some
other port. He reasonably requested that, if he refrainod from forcibly recall
ing tho lcvanter, arraugoracnis should bo rnado for tho just settlement of
cluims so arising. Accordingly, I addressed a Circular letter to tho several
Chiefs on this subject, providing for the surrender of persons 60 evading their
                         lawful debts.
                            31. With Aboolhabco our proceedings under the GoYqruiucul loll®r
