with suspicion and mistrust\ municipalitiou,
girlschools, tho minors' department, diving

public opposition whon they were introduced, Some
of the roformo which wore introduced iu tho educa
tion departmont providod similar opposition.
In hio contacts with tho local Arab authorities
Mr. Vallnnoo wac not ultogether successful, Ho
conuultod Shaikh Abdullah only on general policy
and did not dioouss details with Jilm and as a result
anyone with a grievance about school affairs oould
obtain a hearing from Shaikh Abdullah who often had
no knowledge of t.ho matter mid or discussion. Mr.
Vollnnoo was not very accessible to parents of boys
but hj» work, Including giving daily lessons, occu
pied most of his time. An a ronuit of Mr, Vallanoo's
work, oduoation in Bahrain has Jiaprovod vory greatly.
The principles which ho adopted and the methods and
improvements which ho introduced are new in foroo
and no difficulties nro being made by tho boys or
parents, The Kulliyah or Sooondnry School as it
is now called, has increased to two classes, next
your thore will be a third class, and there was no
trouble ovor the failure of boys to pass the last
examination. A special dootor has been allotted
as a aohool dootor and every Bchool is visited at
loast onoo a week, and in general the recommendations
mado by Mr. Vnllnnoo are being carried out by his •
successor. During hio time as Diruotor of Eduofttion
