                                   large stock of arms in Bahrein, to which I had a right, I ordored them to ho
                                   attached and kopt them in safo custody ponding your arrival in Bahrein.
                                   And you have learned the truo circumstances of tho caso.
                                       I'ecnt you a lottor before ouclosing a list of tho abovomontioned arms.

                                      Below wo give you an extract from the explanation supplied to our London
                                    rm by tho Honourable Mr. Balfour, tho Acting Undcr-Secrctnry of Stato
                                   for Foreign Affairs, with regard to tho seizure of our arms and ammunition
                                   in Bahrein; and ns both our London firm aud ourselves aro unaware of tho
                                   circumstancos statod therein, tho forraor has desired us to apply to you for tho
                                   following particulars, namely :—
                                        (a)  Tho names of tho Bauiaus with whom our firm had differences
                                              last year.
                                        (b)  Tho number and date of tho suits filed by Agha Mohnmed Rahim
                                              against us, and the dato and numbor of tho summons served on
                                              us last year.
                                      t 2. We shall also thank you to favour us with the copy of Colonel Mendo’s
                                   decision, which you read out to our Mr. Fracis, on tho 1st instant at Subzabad,
                                   from his letter to you from Shiraz with rospcct to our complaints against
                                   Mr. Gaskin. We require this to send out to our Loudon firm who had instructed
                                   us to let them know the exact nature of tho decision.
                                       We hope you will favour us with theso before the departure of tho mail
                                   on tho 17th instant.

                                                          of 20th August, 1808.
                                       “Last year differences appoar to have arisen both between Messrs. Fracis
                                   Times & Co. and Agha Mohamed Rahim, and also between the firm and
                                   the native morohants or Banians. Civil proceedings wore in duo course
                                   instituted by Agha Mohamed against Messrs. Fracis Times & Co. which are
                                   reported to be still pending.”

                                       1 am direotod to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of tho 12th ultimo,
                                    and in reply I beg to inform you—
                                         (a) That the complaint of tho Banians at Bahrein was  not directly
                                               against you, hut against Agha Mohamed Rahim, who wus actm?
                                               as your agent. ^ The Banians, who had farmed tho customs, state
                                               MAttl Mohumeu Rahim was bringing in your goods as well as h,s
                                               own at a reduced rate.
                                         (J) Agha Mohamed 11 aliim applied to tbo Bcsidency in April last in
                                               regard to disputes between your firm and himself about proper y
                                               at Bushire, at Bahrein, and'at iiusroh. It is understood tho
                                               regular suit is proceeding at the last named place id tho lur
