Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative

disorder whose pathogenesis includes extracellular deposition

β-amyloid, chronic inflammation and cellular insults resulting

from free radicals reactions that may contribute to the

neurotoxicity of AD. Zhang et al. (2006) found that

supplementation of fermented papaya to Alzheimer’s disease

cell model was able to decrease the production of hydroxyl

radicals and superoxide anion as well as decreasing nitric

oxide accumulation and intracellular calcium ion.
