Liver Diseases

A group of Italian, French and Japanese scientists coordinated

a series of studies on the alcoholic liver disease which proved

how fermented papaya reduces the alcoholic oxidative stress

on liver (reduction of plasma and erythrocyte level of

malonyldialdehyde as well as of plasma lipoperoxides). The

results indicated that in chronic liver diseases caused by

               alcohol consumption, fermented papaya preparation

increased the content of glutathione in red blood cells, and

decreased their reactive oxygen species generation,

membrane lipid peroxidation, indicating amelioration of their

               oxidative status.

On the other hand, Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) can

progress to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Oxidative

stress is implicated in NASH progression. Murakami et al (2013)

investigated the effects of FPP on NASH progression using a

rat NASH model. Plasma biochemical parameters and lipid

peroxidation in the liver were elevated in NASH rats. Oral

administration of Fermented Papaya ameliorated these

changes in NASH rats. These results suggest that fermented
