The State of California has passed laws requiring increased recycling of Organic Waste, with the
goal of reducing disposal of organic waste by 50 percent compared to 2014 levels, by 2020.
Please provide your experience with recycling and solid waste in addressing this issue.
The recycling and solid waste are under my department right now. The latest one that we implemented
was the organic waste food recovery program - we installed organic waste bins with major business
sites. We are implementing communitywide recovery program - where if someone has excess food they
can enter it into the system. If someone is in need of food - they can ask for the food - so the food
instead of going into the dump can be reused. We are in compliance with the State's regulations in
               respect with reducing the waste.

What experience do you have in supervising a diverse group of employees, mentoring and growing
them, and what employment issues and challenges have you faced in embracing diversity?

Currently, I have employees who are blue collared workers all the way to highly educated engineers
and everything in between. Depending on I have been supervising this unit of 84 people. I think that
management needs to be applied differently depending on who you are dealing with . Prior to this I
was working with Caltrans where I had 100 people directly reporting to me and 200 reporting
indirectly. So I have many years of experience managing diverse people.

I feel very strong about working with diverse workforces, because diversity comes with strength. I
currently have a very diverse workforce and also when I was with Caltrans at the same time.

The DPW will manage seven divisions and a staff of over 700. What do you see as the challenges
and what is your experience in managing multiple divisions?

The challenge that I see there - is I'm sure that not all of the seven divisions are in the same location.
There can be a mentality that people are isolated. My priority would be to establish that the department
is one department. I need to make sure that my department is getting that message from me. That would
be the challenge in managing 700 people I think.

Anything else you would like to add? If out of area? Are you willing to relocate to the Bay Area
               ( )
