things that we have in terms of innovation and technology. I came on Board and have brought in more
efficiency.
Please describe your experience in the areas of public transportation and traffic reduction.
In my previous job when I was working with Lion County - we had a transportation system where city
and county were working together. My experience in that area is not that extensive.
The State of California has passed laws requiring increased recycling of Organic Waste, with the
goal of reducing disposal of organic waste by 50 percent compared to 2014 levels, by 2020.
Please provide your experience with recycling and solid waste in addressing this issue.
I've been part of the solid waste department for the past 11 years. In my previous job we had an
extensive recycling program. We did several things to encourage recycling. We had a dumpster for
different levels of sorting - rather than everything is put in one dumpster. We would offer them free
dumping. We also did - twice a year - everyone would bring their stuff - especially electronics. We would
serve them lunch - we made sure we could address these issues.
What experience do you have in supervising a diverse group of employees, mentoring and growing
them, and what employment issues and challenges have you faced in embracing diversity?
I have a lot of experience. I have been manger for the last 15+ years. The largest team today is 86
people. I am very comfortable with diverse. I am in very much a white community but the oil growth
has brought many people to the community and it is my job to advocate for diversity because we
need to make sure we are hiring people for their talent and their qualifications. I am very much pro
diversity. We have people form AfricanAmerican origin, we have some people from south America,
and other nationalities. I am very comfortable and very friendly towards them. They have to compete
with everyone else I am selecting them purely for their personality and their experience. In my
department you will see a very diverse makeup.
The DPW will manage seven divisions and a staff of over 700. What do you see as the challenges
and what is your experience in managing multiple divisions?
For the last 11 years I have managed 6-7 different divisions. It is a very enjoyable experience. My style
is being very friendly and very open - based on best practices and merit - it gives confidence that people
will be treated fairly. The focus on merit and being kind to people. I am very respectful and polite. That
doesn't stop me from making difficult decisions. I have handled all kinds of things you can imagine a
manager would have to face. The other side we can offer is make sure people feel comfortable - I am
very mindful of the side that we offer. We have had reasonable success training people. My biggest
success I hiring people straight out of college. We have some senior and experienced engineers as well.
Anything else you would like to add? If out of area? Are you willing to relocate to the Bay Area
( )
I recently completed a leadership program. I do care about people who are part of my team. I would
make a very good leader for the department. You can google my name and look for references. I
conduct myself even off hours in a way that I am conducting business. I am an ethical business, and a
reputable professional in the area. Elected officials know me on first-name basis.
Just has to pass the Seismic engineering exam to get his license. 3rd exam of 3.
Committed to relocating
