12 Nurse & PA Recruitment and Retention Annual Report FY23
RETIREMENT ELIGIBILITY (UMPNC)
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE MEANS PREPARING FOR NUMEROUS NURSE RETIREMENTS
Over the next 3 years, the number of UMPNC nurses eligible to retire will increase by 62%, accentuating
the need for continuous workforce planning efforts. To augment staffing needs, units are offering Per Diem
and RN TEMP positions to nurses who might otherwise retire completely. Additional strategies will be
necessary for the foreseeable future.

RETIREMENT ELIGIBILITY (LEADERSHIP)
DEMAND FOR NURSING LEADERS KEEPS GROWING, AS DO REASONS TO GROW OUR OWN
Over 23% of our Nurse Leaders may be eligible to retire by 2026. This includes Clinical Nursing Directors,
Supervisors, and executive leadership. Demand for Nursing Leaders is expected to grow throughout this
period, not only within our organization but throughout the profession.
This underscores the need for succession planning and the need to recruit, retain and promote nurses with
leadership talent and potential.
