14 Nurse & PA Recruitment and Retention Annual Report FY23
EDUCATION LEVELS OF RN WORKFORCE
PERCENTAGE OF NURSES WITH BSN DEGREE OR HIGHER IS RISING
Based on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations and University of Michigan Health Magnet®
goal, the Nurse Executive Council set the target to achieve and maintain a goal of 80% of nurses with
nursing degrees (BSN or higher) by 2020/2021.
Over the last fiscal year, the education levels of the nursing workforce having a BSN or higher degree have
exceeded the IOM recommendation. A total of 85% of the Michigan Medicine nurses have a BSN degree,
or higher. *Source: Magnet Department
Nurse Recruitment & Retention continues to funnel BSN graduate nurses to our open vacancies and
encourages our existing RNs to pursue higher education within Nursing.

DIVERSITY EFFORTS HELP US BETTER REFLECT THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE
With an increasing focus on diversity, equity and
inclusion (DEI), our recruitment efforts continue
to explore avenues that will ensure we reflect the
communities we serve.
Recent census data indicates that 79% of
Michiganders identify as white (alone), while
82.83% of our nurses identify as white. Nearly
10% of nurses in the United States identify as
male. At U-M, 13.54% identify as male.
