Nurse & PA Recruitment and Retention Annual Report FY23 13
DEGREES HELD BY OUR FY 23 HIRES
THE MAJORITY OF OUR HIRES HOLD A BSN DEGREE OR HIGHER
Following the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation
of improving patient outcomes by getting 80% of
the nursing workforce to a Bachelor of Science in
Nursing or higher, we list the BSN degree as a desired
qualification in all RN job postings, and therefore
strive to hire nurses with BSN degrees.
Associate degree nurses are also hired at Michigan
Medicine. Many of these nurses are current U-M
employees who have already demonstrated their
energy and commitment to the organization.
As an employer of choice, we support professional
development and growth of our employees and hope
they will continue to take advantage of educational
support and tuition reimbursement toward obtaining a

higher nursing degree.
EXPERIENCE LEVELS OF OUR FY 23 HIRES
FINDING A BALANCE OF EXPERIENCE AND NEW GRADS
Of all RN hires in FY 2023, 53%
had less than one year of RN
experience. This represents a
healthy skill mix and speaks to our
ability to attract new graduates and
experienced nurses.
As the demand for advanced
practice professionals continues
to grow, our challenge will be
maximizing our ability to hire newly
graduated NPs into the workforce.
This would reduce the number of
nurses who we support through
tuition reimbursement during the RN NP
NP education and training, but who
then must leave our organization to SOURCE: NRR NEW HIRE TRACKING FY 23
