Nurse & PA Recruitment and Retention Annual Report FY23 23
THE FUTURE OF GRADUATE NURSE SCREENING
RECRUITERS EVALUATE GRADUATE NURSE APPLICANTS BEYOND THE RESUME
For many years the Nurse Recruitment Team had set aside 4 hours per week of uninterrupted time to talk
with our BSN Graduate Nurse applicants and our own Michigan Medicine ADN Graduate Nurse applicants.
In 2021 we implemented an on-demand virtual interview process. This has allowed the candidates to be able
to record their responses to a designated set of questions, at the time that works best for them. This new
process has not only shown a better response rate, but also provides a new resource for the hiring team to
be able to understand an applicant’s background and passion for nursing beyond the black and white of a
resume.
This year we spoke with, and successfully screened, 300 new graduate nurses. The ongoing interest in
Michigan Medicine as a destination health system for new graduate nurses across the US is evident by the
sustained response rate of interested applicants.
What constitutes a GN screening?
Each GN candidate is invited to record their responses to a set of questions. A Nurse Recruiter will then view
these video interviews and score them on the following competencies; scholastic achievement, leadership,
work/life experience, communication, professionalism and their passion for nursing.
From these interviews, the recruiters highlight the top performers and recommend those candidates to our
hiring managers for consideration.
