42 Nurse & PA Recruitment and Retention Annual Report FY23
NEW HIRES INTERACTION
NURSING LEADERSHIP ENGAGEMENT WITH NEW HIRES IS CRITICAL TO SATISFACTION AND SUCCESS AT
MICHIGAN MEDICINE!
Over the years, data has shown that manager interaction with new nurses directly impacts new hire
satisfaction. We also know that ongoing feedback from unit leadership during orientation is critical to the
success of a new hire.
We saw the percentages of FY23 new hires reporting “a sit down with a manager or supervisor” or that
they “received regular feedback during orientation-in both verbal and written communication” increase
overall from the last couple years of declining numbers. This increase in Nursing Leadership engagement
with new hires is a trend in the right direction, and reflects the hard work being done to positively impact
retention of our nurses.
There is still improvement needed with communication between Nursing Leadership and nursing staff as
10% of our new hires report no interaction with their manager in their first 45 days of employment and
20% report they are not receiving regular feedback.
Describe your interaction, during orientation, with your Clinical Nursing Director or Nurse Supervisor:
Are you receiving regular feedback regarding your orientation progress?
