Nurse & PA Recruitment and Retention Annual Report FY23 43
NEW HIRES: WHAT CAUSES YOU STRESS?
Our FY23 new hires unseated parking as the #1 stressor, replacing it with “Feeling that I will make a mistake”
coming in at 18.27%. The increased feeling of uncertainty in their practice could be from the record number
of Graduate Nurses that were hired in FY23 as these nurses had limited clinical experience due to the COVID
Pandemic.
Parking took a back seat as the #2 stressor at 15%, down from 19% last year. The stress of parking at University of
Michigan Health has been the #1 reported stressor by our new hires for the last few years. However, administration
heard the staff loud and clear, and has been making strides toward improvements to increase the parking
availability and this decrease is reflective of the positive efforts being made.
Making the jump from being the #6 stressor in FY22, to #3 in FY23 is having a “sense of belonging and integration
into the culture of the new unit”. The feeling of community within the nursing units will always lead to increased
retention of our new hires The rise of this being the #3 stressor in FY23 by our new hires is something to not
be ignored, and should be addressed on every nursing unit. Workload dropped from #3 to #6 and this could be
attributed to the COVID pandemic ending, along with the reduction of high acuity ICU patients, and the sheer
volume of COVID patients that was such a focal point in healthcare during the pandemic.
