Nurse & PA Recruitment and Retention Annual Report FY23 45
EXIT SURVEYS PROVIDE VALUABLE FEEDBACK
RN AND APP SURVEYS AFTER TERMINATION KEEP US INFORMED
Several years ago nurse recruitment began sending exit surveys to RNs, APRNs, and PAs, who left Michigan
Medicine to solicit feedback regarding their experience in the work environment. Questions include reasons
for leaving, future plans, suggestions for change or improving retention, perceived equity, inclusion, and
diversity within their unit and the organization.
In FY23 there were 556 terminations, with an 18.5% response rate to the survey. Top reasons for leaving
included retirement, work schedule, workload, and work-life balance. Respondents highly valued
relationships with peers, making a difference, patient population, and the personal and professional
fulfillment as reasons making it difficult to leave.
Questions related to satisfaction with communication, teamwork, and manager support are included,
which highlight areas for improvement. Results are shared quarterly with nursing leadership for review and
discussion in effort to improve unit retention.

and have the best memories.”
