Common Uses
8.2 Using Adverb Clauses
Adverb clauses are commonly used in academic writing to express relationships between ideas in a
sentence. They often indicate when, where, how, or why something happened. Adverb clauses are
used to express:
1. a reason or cause (with because, since, or as) Some people overeat because they are
depressed.
2. a contrast between ideas (with while, While it is well-known that musical training
although, though, even though, or whereas) develops children’s motor skills, recent research
shows it also helps children mature emotionally.
3. a concession; an opposing idea that is Although autism is considered a mental
surprising (with although, though, even disability, some autistic people are highly skilled
though, or while) in art, music, or math.
4. a purpose (with so or so that) Some people move to big cities so (that) they do
not have to waste time commuting to work.
