                                                                  Forest Biomes

                                     1  A biome is a large area that has a similar climate and similar plants and animals.

                                  2  Biomes can be categorized in different ways including, for example, deserts, coral reefs,
                                  grasslands, and forests.  Within a biome category, there may also be smaller groups

                                  or divisions.  The forest biome is such an example.  Within the forest biome, there

                                  are different types of forests and different kinds of trees.  However, a deciduous forest

                                  contains trees that lose their leaves in the fall and grow new ones in the spring.  A

                                  maple tree is an example of a deciduous tree.  In contrast, a coniferous forest contains

                                  trees that have needle-like leaves.  These coniferous trees are green all year round, or

                                  they are sometimes called evergreen trees.  A pine tree is an example of a coniferous

                                  tree.  A forest that has both deciduous and coniferous trees is called a mixed forest.
