Common Uses








                15.3   Using Coordinating Conjunctions

                 Coordinating conjunctions show the relationship between words, phrases, or sentences. They are
                 used:

                 1.  to show addition               Plants need air, water, sun, and nutrients to survive.

                   (and)
                 2. to show contrast                Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was a short but
                   (but, yet)                       powerful speech.


                 3. to show choice                  The most popular cruises are to the Caribbean or to Alaska.
                   (or)

                 4. to show result                  During a recession, unemployment rises, so consumers try to
                   (so)                             save more and spend less.







                15.4   Using Subordinating Conjunctions
                 Subordinating conjunctions show the relationship between a dependent clause and an independent
                 clause. They are used:

                 1. to show contrast                Although the cost of a college education is high, the benefits
                   (although, even though, while)   outweigh the cost.

                 2. to show reason                  Protecting one’s personal information is important because
                   (as, because, since)             identity theft continues to grow.

                 3. to show time                    A good test-taking strategy is to preview the entire test before
                   (after, as soon as, before, until,   answering any questions on it.
