RemembeR: Use either a subordinating conjunction or a coordinating conjunction to
connect a dependent clause with an independent clause. Do not use both.
ACTIVITY 4 Common Error 15.1
Each sentence or pair of sentences below contains an unnecessary connector. Cross out the extra
connector, and make any capitalization or punctuation changes needed. There may be more than one way
to correct a sentence.
1. Citizens participate in local government by electing city officials. Furthermore, citizens also have the
opportunity to share their views and opinions at city council meetings.
2. While sugar-free foods may help people lose weight, but they may also lead people to eat more
because they think they have “saved” calories.
3. Although many may think Hamlet is Shakespeare’s most popular play, yet Romeo and Juliet is, in fact,
the most popular one.
4. Because the honeybee population has steadily declined and bee colonies have collapsed, so the U.S.
Department of Agriculture has taken steps to identify the causes and find a solution.
5. Although researchers have not yet found a cure for HIV, but they are hopeful they will be close to a
cure within the next five years.
6. Because melanoma is one of the most dangerous types of skin cancer, so people need to avoid the
sun during the hottest time of the day, wear sunscreen, and see a dermatologist every year.
7. Although researchers have identified the genes that allow lizards to regrow their tails, but they are in
the beginning stages of applying their knowledge in ways to help people.
8. The decision to start a business is not an easy one to make. Consequently, to make the right decision,
an entrepreneur must, therefore, make the commitment to raise capital, set goals, and work hard.
