RemembeR: • Do not use a comma with subordinating conjunctions when the independent clause is
before the dependent clause.
• A semi-colon can be used before a transition.
• Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction when connecting two independent
clauses.
• Use a comma after the transition when two independent clauses form one sentence.
ACTIVITY 7 Common Error 15.4
Find and correct the punctuation error in each sentence or group of sentences. Make any capitalization
changes needed. More than one answer may be possible.
1. Although Pierre-Auguste Renoir, the French impressionist painter, had severe arthritis he continued to
paint until his death in 1919.
2. In 1988, the United Nations peacekeepers received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts as a result
they gained the trust of many nations.
3. Classroom teachers may take one of two approaches in the classroom. One is to encourage
cooperative behavior, in which students work together to meet a goal or objective, in contrast,
encouraging competitive behavior is an approach in which students work alone and may even
compete against each other for grades.
4. While foreign particles in the atmosphere are not necessary for a blue sky they are needed for the
deep red sunrises and sunsets people enjoy.
5. Critical thinkers distinguish fact from opinion. For example, “Ottawa is the capital of Canada” is a fact
but “Ottawa is the best place to go on vacation” is an opinion.
6. Although, many businesses offer health benefits to their employees, some large employers have
reduced their employees’ hours to avoid having to offer benefits.
7. Earth and Mars are two very different planets, but they still share some similarities. Both planets have
days that are about 24 hours long, in addition, both planets have seasons and similar axis tilts.
8. Each country has a favorite national or regional dish, one which is made with local ingredients and
which reflects the country’s culture. For example Hungary is known for its goulash, Spain for its
paella, and Saudi Arabia for its Kabsa.
