15.5    Using Transitions

            Transitions connect related ideas between independent clauses (sentences) or paragraphs. They
            show:

            1. addition                                       A person found guilty of a crime may be
              (in addition, also, furthermore)                sentenced to prison. In addition, the person
                                                              may be required to pay a fine.

            2. contrast                                       Cell phones allow users to communicate
              (however, in contrast)                          anytime and anywhere; however, their use often
                                                              results in less face-to-face interaction.

            3. result                                         A person’s career may span over 40 years.
              (therefore, as a result, consequently, thus)    Therefore, it is important to find a meaningful
                                                              career.

            4. examples                                       A short story includes several literary elements.
              (for example, for instance)                     For example, it has characters, a setting,
                                                              a theme, and a plot.


            5. sequence                                       There are several ways to pay for college. First,
              (first, next, then, finally, last)              apply for available scholarships and grants. Next,
                                                              look into getting a private loan.

           For each sentence, underline the correct connector to show the relationship given in parentheses. Use
           the punctuation in the sentence to help you choose the connector.

             1. There are several rhetorical styles used in academic writing. (For example / However / As a result),
              descriptive writing uses details involving the five senses—sight, taste, smell, touch, and hearing—to
              create a picture in the reader’s mind. (example)

             2. A career in aerospace engineering pays well, (although / but / however) job opportunities are projected
              to decrease over the next decade for a number of reasons. (contrast)

             3. In some cultures, women are viewed as delicate and fragile, (as a result / so / therefore) their
              participation in sports such as soccer or kickboxing may be viewed negatively. (result)
             4. (Until / When / Before) natural disasters occur, several worldwide agencies work together to provide
              food, water, shelter, and medical care to victims. (time)

             5. During difficult economic times, people often look for a sign of hope. The racehorse Seabiscuit was
              that sign during the Depression (so / then / because) the small underrated horse won race after race
              and became a champion. (reason)

             6. Every culture has legends, which explain its customs or its heroes. (And / For example / In addition),
              every culture has folktales, which have a moral, and often teach appropriate behavior. (addition)
