In The Line of Fire The Early Years
FIRE...
Controlled, it is vital to life itself...
uncontrolled, it has the capacity to destroy
properties, lives, whole cities...
In those early days, the Lequime Bros. owned a sawmill on the waterfront.
In 1892 the dry kiln had caught fire for the third time and was totally destroyed.
Volunteer Bucket Brigades fought the fire and saved the nearby lumber and buildings.
In the summer of 1899, the sawmill,
now owned by Lequime and Lloyd-Jones, had another fire.
Men from the Bucket Brigades again saved a great deal of lumber,
and within a few days, construction was started on a new sawmill.
In 1902 David Lloyd-Jones bought out Bernard Lequime’s partnership in the sawmill.
That summer the sawmill whistle screamed again, just after midnight,
due to another fire which totally destroyed the sawmill.
The Bucket Brigades drew water from the lake and
most of the lumber was saved, because of little wind.
