In The Line of Fire 1904 - 1910
The Broderick Pump
This hand pumper, manufactured in San Francisco in 1850, and purchased from the
City of Vernon for $400, became Kelowna’s first fire fighting equipment in 1904.
This pumper, and 400 feet of 3.5 inch hose with a leather suction intake,
was capable of shooting water a distance of 75 feet.
The Broderick arrived on the Aberdeen and the Volunteer Brigade quickly made an
initial run up Bernard Ave., with Fire Brigade Chief S.T. Elliott leading the way.
The pumper,
which required
20 men to operate,
was used a short time
and then retired to the
Kelowna City Park.
It was then returned
to San Francisco
as a museum piece by
Mayor Hughes-Games
in 1947.
Some of the original Brigade
and present members
honoured their former “Chief”
at the 25th anniversary
celebration since
James Pettigrew
took over as head of
Kelowna’s Fire Brigade.
A “mock blaze” was arranged,
where the “Frisco Pumper”
was operated by the
original Brigade.
