20.5 Other leading minds in physics
Max PLANCK (1858 - 1947), Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918
for his discovery of the "Planck constant", which became a
universal constant.
Niels BOHR (1885 - 1962), Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922,
for his work on the development of quantum mechanics.
Anecdote : God doesn't roll the dice
Albert EINSTEIN never accepted the finality of
quantum mechanics, which favoured the "probabilistic"
approach over the "deterministic" one he himself
defended.
For Niels BOHR, it is not possible to know - at the same
instant - the speed of a particle and its position. At most, if
we determine its "velocity" precisely, we can calculate a
"probability of presence" for its "position". Albert
EINSTEIN said to Niels BOHR:
"God doesn’t roll the dice"!
Niels BOHR answered: "Who are you to tell God what
to do?"
To date, all experiments have proved Niels BOHR right.
Albert Einstein's "deterministic" school maintains the idea
that it is our current knowledge that does not allow us to
define all the elements with precision.
