My Ariadne’s thread: Science
It's not the centre of the Earth that
attracts objects (Newton), but the
bending of space-time caused by the
masses of planets and stars that deflect
their trajectories.
For his theory, EINSTEIN had explained that it would be
possible to see the light of stars hidden by the sun.
In fact, given the notion of space-time, the mass of the sun
creates a cavity in this space-time which has the effect of
bending the trajectory of moving objects.
In practice, to observe this phenomenon, you need a large
mass like the sun. To be able to look towards the sun and see
the (weak) light of these stars, a total eclipse of the sun with
the moon is essential.
On May 29, 1919, four years after the publication of the
theory of general relativity, a team of astronomers
(EDDINGTON) went to Africa and another (MICHELSON) to
Brazil to observe the bending of light.
