20.6 Cosmology – The Universe
The universe, infinity of infinities.
On the edge of the Big Bang, on the edge of black holes.
A little history
1915 : Albert EINSTEIN publishes the theory of general
relativity.
1917 : Albert EINSTEIN added the "cosmological
constant" to his theory of general relativity,
explaining that the universe is stable and has finite
limits.
1922 : Alexandre FRIEDMANN, Russian, publishes a
paper presenting a model of an expanding universe.
1927 : Georges LEMAÎTRE, Belgian priest, reached the
same results independently of FRIEDMANN's
work.
1931 : Georges LEMAÎTRE publishes a memoir entitled
"The Expanding Universe".
In it, he put forward the hypothesis of the primitive
atom and the concept of the "Big Bang".
1929 : Edwin HUBBLE discovers that galaxies are moving
away from the Milky Way (our galaxy).
Later, he declared: LEMAÎTRE was right, the
universe is expanding.
Albert EINSTEIN later declared: "Introducing the
cosmological constant into my equations was the biggest
mistake of my life”!
