THE EXCEPTIONAL HARLEY FETTERMAN
The following day, as they departed the Chena Hot Springs
mountain resort, the family contemplated buying a lot in the area.
(Their trips to many states often initiated such thoughts.) But upon
further discussion, they decided it might not be so great in the middle
of the winter, dark all day and down to -40 degrees.
Figure 99: Alaskan Totem.
On the last night of their Alaskan adventure, the northern lights
were out again. They were in Fairbanks where it was difficult to find
an area dark enough to be able to view the Aurora Borealis. The
northern lights started as a band of light running parallel to the
horizon, then spiraled out like ghostly fingers before ballooning
upward to fill up the sky. This time in addition to the green colors,
pink and blue tones mixed in the light spectacle making the colored
light shimmer iridescently as it soared above them waving a farewell
to the end of their Alaska vacation. As they traveled southward
towards Texas, they soon were shedding their coats, replacing them
with comfortable traditional attire, t-shirts.
