On a nearly 400-acre section of property, part of the original
Shaeffer ranch, Harley and his parents enjoyed hanging out at their
bunkhouses which were often the site of various family adventures.
This ranch site has many Huajilla trees on it and the family calls it
Rancho de Huajillo Harley. One bunkhouse has a kitchen, living
room, bedroom, and bath. The second bunkhouse (just a bedroom and
bathroom) is known as “Harley's bunkhouse.” It also has a microwave
and little refrigerator. Harley had a special fondness for his bunkhouse
often commenting that his two favorite places on earth were his
bunkhouse and Hawaiian beaches.

During Spring break, Harley and his parents would always have
special adventures planned such as trip to Puerto Rico with Kathy
Freeborn Strause, her daughter Kate, and Kate's son, Wyatt. They
th
were celebrating Kate's 30 birthday.
This trip was undertaken to investigate the college that Beth's
grandfather, Clarence Harris, an engineer, built in San German with
his brother, Rev. John Will Harris, a Presbyterian missionary. The
Inter American University of Puerto Rico and was founded in 1912.
This adventure was planned to pass on this historical experience to
family members who had not yet traveled there to explore.
